Perchè sono necessari i prodotti antistatici per i vinili?

Why are antistatic products necessary for vinyl records?

Antistatic products are essential to maintain the sound quality and longevity of your records. Vinyl (PVC) easily accumulates static charges, especially due to friction with inner sleeves or during rotation on the turntable. This is why you cannot do without them.

Elimination of background noise: Static causes those annoying crackles and discharges ("pops" and "clicks") that disturb listening, especially noticeable in quiet passages.

Prevention of dust buildup: An electrically charged record acts like a magnet for dust. Removing the charge prevents dirt from settling and "hardening" in the grooves.

Protection of the stylus: By reducing the dust that sticks to the vinyl, it prevents the needle (stylus) from becoming excessively dirty or suffering electric discharges, thus extending its life.

Recommended tools to manage the problem

Carbon fiber brushes: whose conductive bristles discharge static electricity while removing surface dust.

Antistatic inner sleeves: replace the original paper ones (which often charge the record) to keep the vinyl "neutral" during storage.

Specific cleaning liquids: Antistatic cleaners for vinyl records are specifically formulated to deeply remove dirt, leaving a thin conductive layer on the surface, able to eliminate static charges. These products are mainly found in three types: ready-to-use sprays for quick cleaning, solutions made for use with record cleaning machines (both manual and vacuum) and concentrates to mix with distilled water.

Stylus cleaning: To eliminate static electricity directly from the stylus, and not only from the record, it is essential to use specific products that act as conductors or neutralize the ionic charge accumulated on the needle during the entire interaction with the grooves. These tools are made with adhesive polyurethane or silicone polymers, able to capture dust microparticles without rubbing, thus significantly reducing the static charge present on the tip.
